Adhesives - Products and Applications

PRODUCTS

Waterbased Adhesives

Waterbased adhesives use water as the carrier fluid, with the adhesive particles suspended in water, reducing the adhesive’s viscosity so that it can be applied to various substrates at varying thicknesses.  Evaporation of the carrier fluid during the set and cure stages typically occurs through exposure to air. Evaporation and cure also can take place in the open under high-thermal conditions.  Today, waterbased adhesives are used in a variety of applications but are mainly found in corrugated assembly, folding carton applications, case and carton seal applications, bookbinding and woodworking.

Hot Melt Adhesives

Hot melt adhesives are solvent-free adhesives that are characteristically solid at temperatures below 180 degrees F (°F), are low viscosity fluids above 180°F, and set rapidly upon cooling. The development of hot melt adhesive technology stemmed from the previous use of molten wax for bonding. When this method no longer satisfied performance needs, 100 % thermoplastic systems were introduced.  Hot melt adhesives are made of tackifying resins, waxes, antioxidants, and plasticizers.  Today, hot melt adhesives are used in a variety of manufacturing processes, including bookbinding, product assembly, and box and case and carton sealing.

Palmetto Adhesives offers its customers a variety of hot melt products, from the original EVA products, to low temp products, and top of the line products like Metallocene.

Polyurethanes (Liquid and Hot Melt Reactive)

Unlike waterbased and hot melt adhesives, urethanes and polyurethanes cure primarily with the introduction of moisture.  They are available in several forms, liquid, two-part, foaming and solid.  Today, polyurethanes are heavily used in the woodworking industries, textiles, manufactured home construction and bookbinding.

Epoxies and Acrylics

Epoxies are available in one and two part liquids and pastes.  Epoxies provide the highest strength and elevated temperature resistance.

Acrylics are two part liquids and pastes that bond the widest variety of substrates including hard-to-bond plastics and oily metals.  The distinction is high strength bonding without the surface preparation needed for epoxies and urethanes.

Palmetto Adhesives carries 3M Scotch-Weld epoxy and acrylic products.  We consider these 3M lines to be the best in the industry.

Aerosol Products

The convenience of spray adhesives, cleaners, and lubricants and the wide variety of industrial applications they can be used in have made them more and more popular.

Palmetto Adhesives carries the 3M line of aerosol products, which are widely considered the best in performance, quality, and mileage.  Recently, 3M added higher volume canisters to their line, this is a real cost saver for customers that use large volumes of aerosol adhesives.
